Adding The Shimmer

“Oregon Aspen Grove” 40″ x 60″ oil and wax – SOLD

I love aspen trees and I have painted them for many years. I even have two tall aspen tree trunks in my studio under my skylights to keep me inspired. The texture of the bark and dark spots as contrast are a constant fascination. The trouble with painting them is that they are so tall that the leaves would be totally out of the painting, so I have to add a lot of background leaves of mostly vine maple trees to fill in the composition.

“Canadian Woods Turning Red” 36″ x 36″ acrylic – SOLD

After painting the same white, brown, red and yellow for years, I decided to add something new and chose composition gold metal leaf for the leaves. I didn’t expect that this would turn into a totally new technique for me, but I have never been more joyful in creating paintings since I added the shimmer.

“Catching the Light” 36″ x 36″ oil and metal leaf – $2,900

At first I just added small amounts of the metal leaf, but as I realized the possibilities and became more proficient in the application, I have expanded the gold and silver as a background and contrast to the painted image. I’m currently working on another aspen tree painting. It will still have the vine maples in the background, but the metal leaf will glow and contrast the textured trunks of the trees.
