“A Blast of Winter” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf – $5,000
The Pacific Northwest is known for its many rainy days that keep the plants and trees green, but we still have a couple of snow storms each year. They seriously shut down most of the city because of driving difficulties that make commuting dangerous. Even though my commute is just over a deck between the house and studio, I prefer to stay safe from a possible fall on the snow and icy surface. Taking a “snow day” gives me a chance to catch up on other tasks and think about future paintings.
I completed the painting above last year after one snow storm and used the sieving application technique of adding silver to the canvas. It is the most difficult to control of all of the metal leaf applications, so I don’t use it very often. The easier application is adding small bits of the metal leaf at a time, even though it takes longer to cover a large area of the canvas. Applying squares and cut patterns of the foil is faster and I can cut the pieces ahead in the house, so it is one of my “snow day” tasks.

“Anticipation of Spring” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf – $5,000
With the submission deadline for the Portland Art Museum’s Rental/Sales Gallery spring show nearing, I’m finishing two new paintings to add to the one above. The spring paintings usually take longer since they involve many blossoms and leaves to paint, but they also cheer me to think of the warmer weather and bright trees and plants about to bloom.

“Ornamental Plum Trees” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf – $5,000
The plum trees are the first to bloom in our garden and cheer us with their beauty. I completed this painting last year and it is currently at the Rental/Sales Gallery.
