Yearning For Spring

” A Variegation of Hydrangeas” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $5,000

The weather is cold, but some lovely camellias have just popped out in our garden giving a promise of spring. We still have bare branches on all of the maple trees, and the cherry blossoms have yet to appear, but I have some photos of past blooms and I’m starting to paint a new composition of them.

As usual, I’m painting spring and summer paintings in winter and completed the iris painting recently. It took much longer to paint because of the complexity of the flowers and the many bits of composition metal leaf applied to the background one at a time. I added the sun as a necessary element of nature for plant growth, but also as a compositional element for the painting.

“Shimmering Blooms of May” 48″ x 36″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $6,000

I’m also looking forward to late spring when the many bulbs our daughters planted last fall will erupt in a glory of color and give me even more inspiration for future paintings.

“A Dazzle of Dogwoods” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4,700

Pink dogwood trees are also among my favorites, and this painting was on the cover of my 2025 Pomegranate calendar and is currently in the Portland Art Museum Rental/Sales Gallery inventory as well as the hydrangea painting.
