Adding Sunlight

“Oregon Sunshine” 24″ x 36″ oil and metal leaf – $1,900

I live in the Pacific Northwest, noted for its many rainy days during the year. I love the lush green forests and foliage that result, but after too many gray days I feel the need to brighten my mood in my paintings. Most of the time, the circle of the sun is also a compositional element to focus attention on a certain area of the painting and pull together those features. The actual brightness comes from the gold and silver metal leaf backgrounds. Since I started using this technique, my studio glows from the reflected light of the metal leaf.

“Intermittent Sunshine” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf – SOLD

Both of the paintings above depict the days when the sun and rain exist at the same time and delights me when it happens.

“Persimmon Branch” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf – SOLD

The day that I photographed several persimmon threes, the sky was so blue and the sun so bright that the persimmons glowed. I tried to recapture that same spirit with “Persimmon Branch”

“The Eclipse” 48″ x 36″ oil and metal leaf – $3,900

I was having a show during the month that our area had an eclipse of the sun and I couldn’t resist painting it even though it was a total lack of sunshine. The high drama of the occasion just need to be commemorated.
