Hydrangea Memories

“Hydrangea Memories” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4,300

Of all of the plants in our garden, the one that evokes the most memories is the hydrangea. We have purchased a couple of unusual colors, but the rest of the plants were gifts for either special occasions or sympathy offerings for sad losses of loved ones. They continue to cheer us every summer with their glorious display of color and I’m always inspired to paint them.

I have also photographed hydrangea gardens in the neighborhood and in nursery gardens so that I have an ample supply for the future to create at least one painting a year. “Shimmering Hydrangea Garden” has a special memory for me because it is from a garden in our neighborhood that I photographed many years ago. It was spectacular, with several huge plants that obviously had been nurtured for many years. The next year I was shocked to see that all of the plants had been cut down by the new owner of the property. Since then, I have created several paintings of the those beautiful blossoms in both watercolors and oils and will continue to memorialize them in future paintings.

My major fascination with the hydrangea is the variation of flower colors in each plant. I also enjoy the changes each blossom has over the summer, ranging from pink and blue to a bright green in autumn. I’m planning a new painting of one plant that explores all of the possibilities of this color range.

Both “Hydrangea Memories” and “Shimmering Hydrangea Garden” are currently at the Portland Art Museum Rental/Sales Gallery and also have appeared in a Pomegranate calendar of my work.
