Expanding on a Theme

Woodland Sanctuary” 40″ x 60″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $7,000

I have discovered over my years of painting that once I start painting a subject, I keep coming back to it and exploring new ways to portray it in future paintings. In recent years, my inspiration has mostly come from my own garden and photos I took in the past of trees and plants that appealed to me.

“Woodland Sanctuary” is my most recently completed painting and portrays the pine tree from my front yard along with a fir tree and a branch of vine maple in my backyard. I enjoy sitting on our deck and looking at all of the trees surrounding it and feeling a sense of joy at their beauty. It is my creative sanctuary.

“Northwest Autumn” 40″ x 60″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $7,000

“Northwest Autumn” was created last year and I was so inspired by our majestic pine tree that it became the main focus on this year’s painting. I have already planned another view of it combined with shorter plants in the future.

“Persimmon Branches” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4,800

“Persimmon Branches” is also a repeat subject of a favorite tree, but it is not in my own yard. I took photos of it at a nearby test garden of fruit trees and grapevines several years ago and I am still inspired by the colors of the fruit and leaves.

Both “Woodland Sanctuary” and “Persimmon Branches” were recently juried in to the Portland Art Museum’s Rental/Sales Gallery fall show, which opens Oct 27th. “Northwest Autumn” is also at the gallery.
