New Explorations

“Vine Maple Hillside” 36″ x 60″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $6,000

In the past, I have changed directions with my work, using different mediums or subjects about every twenty years. Since I started using composition metal leaf in 2015, I have become so inspired by all of the possibilities it has provided that I just want to explore it further.

I used cut squares of metal leaf on the backgrounds of my paintings during many of the early years of painting with the medium. Gradually, I started cutting blossom and leaf patterns for the composition, applying the metal leaf in different ways of cut shapes, sieved or small bits applied one at a time.

Recently, I have started creating patterns of leaves and blades of grass to build a more intricate composition, as in the painting above.

“A Shimmer of Autumn” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $5,500

Some of the leaf patterns have also been toned with transparent oil paint as backgrounds for additional metal leaf shapes to create some depth as in the painting above.

I have two aspen tree trunks standing under the skylights of my studio and they have served as models for the foreground trunks of many aspen paintings I have created over the years. This painting illustrates a more cheerful aspect of the trees.

“Aspen Splendor” 72″x 36″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $7,500

Both”Vine Maple Hillside” and “A Shimmer of Autumn” will be in the Portland Art Museum’s Rental/Sales Gallery winter show, opening December 5. “Aspen Splendor” is also at the gallery.
