Creative Explorations

“Woodland Sanctuary” 40″ x 60″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $7,000

Creativity has been a constant exploration of subjects and mediums throughout my long career as a professional artist. I have painted abstracts, landscapes, forests, plants, seascapes, florals, koi and even carousels in a variety of mediums, including wood bas-reliefs inset between canvases in a frame. Some of the medium changes were because of new interests, but one change forced a major shift in my career and devastated me for months.

“Cape Lookout” 47″ x 72″ oil on canvas – SOLD

In the 70’s I was happily painting oils with thick impastos and doing washes of oil paint thinned with turpentine, when I became very ill and dizzy. Thinking that I had the flu, I stayed out of the studio to recover, only to have the same symptoms when I returned. I was examined by a doctor who strongly urged me to change my medium. This led to my acrylics, followed by watercolors for many years and new learning experiences.

“Mrs. Holland’s Garden” 40″ x 60″ watercolor on 300 lb. Arches paper – NFS

Several years ago, Gamblin Oils created a solvent-free gel with which to thin the paint and I joyfully returned to oils. I had learned a lot of different painting techniques by then and continued to explore even more. This led to my current additions of composition metal leaf to the background of the canvases and each painting now becomes a fresh exploration.
