I’ve been thoroughly enjoying creating paintings of close-up aspen tree trunks the past few months, but I’ve decided to start painting more landscapes with greater distance. I need another challenge to stay creative during the winter months when I have to stay indoors more.
Paintings with a lot of depth can make a room appear larger and can have more of a value range with the colors. Even with my densely wooded forest scenes, I’ve tried to give some distance by painting in a short path, but it is difficult to give an illusion of more than a few yards.
GREATER POSSIBILITIES
I’m currently working on two riverscapes which appear to have at least a half mile distance and have nearly completed another aspen tree painting which seems to go back about two blocks. It has the additional challenge of being all spring colors which can be somewhat limiting.
I’m not quite finished with it and plan to place it in my studio window so that I can view it from a greater distance as I look out my kitchen window. Hopefully, I’ll discover a way to give it greater depth than it has now.
See it below. It is a 60″ x 36″ oil and wax on canvas painting titled “Spring Greens”. Click on the image for a larger view.
