Brightening the Studio Space

painting corner

A bright corner in the studio where paintings wait for the next stage of completion.

I’ve been wondering why a song keeps going through my mind that I haven’t heard since I was a teen and then I looked around my studio and finally realized the significance.  The song is a hymn – “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” and was sung quite a lot in my church.

Actually, all the corners in my studio are currently very bright since several canvases are waiting for their next stage in my new metal leaf technique.  The drawback is the waiting time for various stages to dry before I add the next one.  But the positive aspect is that it gives me plenty of “thinking” time and I’m sure the paintings benefit.

The paintings shown above are waiting for more oil painted leaves to be added to the tree paintings and more metal leaf added to the garden painting.  In addition to studying the paintings for weeks in the studio, I also photograph them during the process, put the images on the computer and observe them both right side up and upside down.  I find that the smaller format brings out aspects that I didn’t see on the large painting.

I’m happy to be back into my painting routine now that the holidays are over and I hope my next blog will actually have a completed, well photographed image to display.
