Aspens – A Favorite Subject

“Aspens With Shadows” 36″ x 48″ oil and wax on canvas – $3,500 – Currently at the Lawrence Gallery

Over the years, I have painted many aspen trees in several mediums and I’m still enjoying the subject. It is a popular tree in the Pacific Northwest, but a challenging composition since the trees are so tall that their tops are usually out of the painting.

“Golden Autumn” 36″ x 60″ acrylic on canvas – SOLD

“Golden Autumn” was a commission and the client wanted a lot of red in the painting, so I used my usual vine maple leaves for the greatest amount of color. I have continued combining the two trees in many of my paintings.

“Spring Greens” 60″ x 36″ oil and wax on canvas – SOLD

“Spring Greens” was a joy to paint because it was less challenging due to the height of the canvas and I also enjoyed concentrating on the aspen trees in a different season and color range.

“Sunlit Forest” 40″ x 60″ watercolor – SOLD

Aspen trees were one of my favorite subjects when I was painting watercolors and also a favorite with collectors of my work. Now, I’m taking the aspen tree to a new direction with my current technique of oil and composition metal leaf. I’m finishing a painting of several aspen trees, again with vine maple leaves to add more color, but this time with golden leaves to balance out the gold metal leaf.
