Capturing The Moment

Metcalf, Joan "Brief Blooms"_edited-3

“Brief Blooms” 24″ x 48″ oil and wax on canvas – $2,200

Every year I watch an amaryllis grow a fraction of an inch a day for a couple of months.  When it gets to full bloom, I enjoy its beauty , but it only lasts about five days before it starts to wither and die.

This year the striped blossoms were so beautiful that I decided to paint them at their peak. I photographed the plant from three different angles and painted a composite of the blooms.

In the past I have painted the full plant, but this year I decided to concentrate on just the blossoms in large scale for greater impact and I’m pleased with the graphic quality of the painting.  It is a departure from my usual garden scenes and landscapes, but it is refreshing to paint something totally different for a change.
