When the leaves of my vine maple trees change their colors from green to gold and red, it is time for the annual fall show at the Rental/Sales Gallery.  I have been showing there since 1965 and it is an important tradition in my life to have paintings in both of the fall and spring shows.

These shows are always juried and the way they are selected has changed over the years with new technology.  The artists used to take the artwork into the gallery to be juried and then pick up the work not selected.  Now, all the jurying is done from digital images and only the ones selected are taken to the gallery.

This process still takes a lot of effort, but since nearly 500 pieces of art were submitted this year, it does eliminate a lot of handling of the work.  The artists are asked to submit three images and only two are selected at the most.  My two paintings are included in the 217 pieces selected and reflect the autumn colors that surround my studio at the moment.

The actual images were inspired by photographic trips to the Santiam forest and Black Butte aspen grove.  One of them is from my oil and cold wax series and the other one is done in my most recent technique of oil and metal leaf.  I wanted to show the sunlight filtered through the leaves in the forest as well as the brilliant colors of autumn.

The opening reception for the show is Oct. 26 from 5-8 pm.  The Rental/Sales Gallery is located at 1237 S.W. 10th Avenue, behind the Portland Art Museum.
