The pandemic has created a new situation for me – no deadlines for shows.  With galleries closed and shows postponed, I found myself with no guidelines for my daily painting.  It has been over 50 years that I’ve had some deadline of either group or featured shows each year and I realized I had to create my own schedule of work or I wouldn’t have an incentive to complete a painting.

I have always had a gallery space or season in mind as I painted for a show, but now I’m trying to create a body of work that has a similar theme and technique, no matter which season.  I seem to need some structure to give each day purpose and enthusiasm.

I just completed both paintings above and the grapevine painting is the last in a “wine country” series while the dogwood painting is the beginning of another – the universe. I may paint more grapevines in the future, but I’m now concentrating on ways to give the backgrounds behind my metal leaf more colors and patterns.  It is also giving me a greater range of possibilities.
