“Shimmering September” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4,700
This has been a very unusual and difficult time for everyone and each of us has had to cope and adapt to ever-changing challenges with as much imagination as possible. For me, the isolation has meant painting more hours with less outside stimulation, so I have used past resource photos for my inspiration to create paintings that I hope cheer others as much as they do for myself.
This painting is my most recent in a series of paintings I have done on the subject of grape vines. I live in an area of many vineyards and have always enjoyed the view of them as we drive past. My particular photos, though, have been from a private garden and also the Oregon Orchard Society Test Garden. These have provided me with constant inspiration as the seasons and growth of the vines change.
The recent wild fires that have destroyed many of the West Coast vineyards have increased my need to paint these beautiful plants. They always promise me an abundance of compositional possibilities with their twisted trunks, huge veined leaves in a variety of sizes and colors, clusters of grapes and trailing vines. I sometimes add a sun to the composition to repeat the shape of the grapes and increase the brightness of the painting.
