Starting a New Series

“A Dazzle of Dogwoods” 36″ x 48″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4, 800

I tend to paint subjects in series – several trees in the same season – the same tree in different seasons, but the start of a new series always varies. In the case of the pink dogwoods, it started when a lady who was familiar with my work asked me to paint a pink dogwood tree for a birthday gift for her husband. Once I started painting these vibrant blossoms and graceful branches, I wanted to explore as many compositions of the trees as I could while I was inspired. These are the results so far.

“A Dazzle of Dogwoods” is on the cover of the Pomegranate 2025 calendar, which has just been designed and the painting is currently at the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery. “Blooming Dogwood” was on the 2023 calendar cover. “Spring Radiance” was included in the 2022 calendar and is also printed in Pomegranate’s boxed notecards.

I’m currently working on a combination of spring blossoms and vivid autumn leaves and thinking ahead for more compositions of these gorgeous trees.
