A Tree For All Seasons

“Penny’s Maple Tree #2″ 36″ x 48” oil and metal leaf on canvas – $4,000

Of All of the subjects I paint, only one inspires me in all seasons. The Japanese Maple tree is lush with feathery leaves from spring through autumn and is still stunning with only its bare branches exposed. I’m continued to be fascinated with the sculptural appearance of the twisted trunk of the tree and its assortment of curving branches after the leaves are gone.

Fortunately, the Japanese Maple tree is also a favorite in our neighborhood, providing me with an assortment of twisting trunks as well as our own tree. I just completed a vertical version of the tree for a couple who needed that format and found it an additional challenge. I gave it a more shimmering background to add even more cheer.

“Autumn Radiance” 48″ x 36″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – SOLD

I plan to start a new painting of the tree next week that will combine both the bareness of the limbs and a scattering of leaves as the tree transitions from autumn to winter. Here is another painting of the tree in full autumn bloom. All but “Autumn Radiance” have appeared in a Pomegranate calendar of my work. Both “Penny’s Maple Tree #2” and “Winter Tree” are in the new 2024 calendar.
