Years ago another painter told me that she always put a sun in each of her paintings.  At the time, I thought it was not a good idea to get tied to an “always” with each composition, but in recent years I have to admit the temptation to add sunshine to each painting has been strong.

This temptation has only started since I began my oil and metal leaf series because the “sunshine” of the glowing metal leaf has become a very large part of my compositions.  Also, the round sun has added an important design element and the light source for the highlights of color on the rest of the image.

I realized that I had to ask myself if needing the sun was really about the composition or my current mood and had to admit that usually it had to do with the gloomy weather or dismal global and national news.  I have limited my use of the sun element, but did also paint the moon and the lack of sunshine in my “Eclipse” painting.
