Painting With New Purpose

“Shimmering Hydrangea Garden” 36″ x 60″ oil and metal leaf on canvas – $6,000

Obviously, life is different for everyone these days and how we cope with it is becoming some kind of personal test.  Some are doing very well, helping others as well as their families and some are falling apart emotionally, if not physically.

My own days are not too different from before we were asked to socially distance ourselves from others.  I’ve done that for years, preferring to stay in my studio and paint every day.  I’m doing that now even though my galleries are all closed and my next show somewhere in the distant future, but it is my mental attitude that has changed significantly.  Without a definite deadline, it almost seems pointless to keep creating paintings that may or may not be seen by anyone but family.

I have had to create my own purpose for each painting, imagining it in different settings, whether a gallery or on-line exhibition.  I’ve even started a new series to inspire me and get me excited each time I go to the studio.  I’ve ordered new colors of paint to expand possibilities and stocked up on canvases and all of the supplies I will need for months ahead.

I used to try to create paintings that would cheer the viewer as well as myself, but now, my purpose has become different.  I’m painting works that hopefully will cheer someone forced into seclusion with them for months on end.

I had wondered how people would react to these paintings  after being secluded with them and I was recently surprised and pleased to learn that I had not only sold one of the paintings that had been rented by the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery, but also had a painting renewed for another 3 months. Of course the gallery is closed at this time, but business is still conducted by appointment and telephone.  Here are the paintings.
